Welcome to this month’s edition of the Proto Hologram newsletter. From transforming the traveler experience at Boston Logan Airport to advancing medical education at University of Nebraska Medical Center, powering immersive entertainment, and earning recognition for groundbreaking experiences, Proto continues to push what’s possible with holographic technology. Across industries and audiences, these stories reflect the growing impact and versatility of Proto technology.
“We’re always looking for innovative ways to assist our guests… [Proto] can provide you step by step directions and a QR code that you can scan so you can take those directions with you throughout your trip at the airport.”
– Mia Healy-Waldron, Deputy Director of Customer Service at Boston Logan Airport
Even the best technology in the world doesn’t sell itself. According to Proto Founder and Executive Chairman David Nussbaum, the real work of building a category is helping the buyer feel the impact of the product before their customers ever experience it. That’s a lesson he learned decades before Proto existed, as a radio executive. Nobody got excited buying thirty spots in a broadcast rotation, but the moment an advertiser could own the sponsorship attached to every stolen base or home run in a sports broadcast, the conversation changed completely. They weren’t just buying airtime anymore, they were buying the moment fans would remember. That’s a similar principle behind every Proto deployment today. The hardware is just the delivery mechanism. A Proto Luma in an airport terminal, as a museum installation, or display on a retail floor. What’s actually exclusive is what’s inside it: the multilingual avatar wayfinder greeting travelers in their own language, the AI product expert speaking in a retailer’s tone and expertise, the CEO or celebrity beaming in for a live experience built around one brand’s voice. That unrepeatable experience belongs to whoever claims it, in that space, in that moment, even as Proto keeps growing into new locations and industries. Proto is increasingly being recognized as the face of AI, especially in physical spaces, not just as a hologram company. Most people still think of AI as a chatbot on a screen, but Proto is what happens when that intelligence gets a presence in the room. Every partnership, every pilot, and every rollout offers the same opportunity: a brand new category waiting to be claimed. Proto exists to help our customers own the moment nobody else can. |
Meet Amelia: Boston Logan Airport's Holographic AI Wayfinder
“Amelia,” the AI avatar wayfinding assistant now available across all of Boston Logan Airport’s terminals, was introduced to the public in a full-page feature in the Boston Globe Sunday Edition.
The deployment is the largest and most elaborate system of its kind in any airport in the world. From any Proto unit, travelers can ask Amelia for directions to hundreds of locations throughout the airport, get real-time TSA information, communicate in multiple languages, and even connect with a live customer service representative when needed. And Amelia is already extending passenger support in a big way. Travelers are turning to her for help thousands of times each week, with roughly one in five of those interactions happening outside typical staffed hours. Massport projects that Amelia will assist approximately 150,000 passengers each year.
Proto is grateful to our partners on the project Holomedia AI and Geminai. The Globe story inspired a wave of stories across all of the travel and aviation press as well as a visit with NBC Boston.
Proto Scores a Win at the Patriots' Hall of Fame
Nearby, the New England Patriots announced their Proto installation won the prestigious ISHY award from the International Sports Heritage Association (ISHA) for The Best New Exhibit for the We Are All Patriots Stage – a unique immersive experience that brings fans “face-to-face” with players, coaches, and other team contributors. Using Proto Hologram technology, the exhibit displays life-sized, holographic projections of Patriots legends and features subjects and stories that are updated on a monthly basis.
Currently, the We Are All Patriots Stage is showing “Playing for the Patriots” which features former players like Mike Vrabel, Julian Edelman, Vince Wilfork, Andre Tippett, Devin McCourty, and more.
Proto's Michael Experience Lands an Obie Nomination
More awards: Proto’s Michael experience – in partnership with Lionsgate and Pretty Big Monster – was nominated for an Obie Award in the category of Best Immersive Experience from the Out of Home Advertising Association (OAAA). The Michael activation took place in 59 movie theaters and malls nationwide, and gave the public a chance to learn Michael Jackson’s Moonwalk and other signature moves from his real life dance coach. The awards will be given in New York City on October 15th.
UNMC Expands the Reach of Medical Education with Proto
The University of Nebraska Medical Center’s iExcel program continues to innovate with Proto in education. The program beams teachers, students and medical patients via its networked Proto units to its multiple campuses every day. In particular, professor Dr. Brad Dexter uses the technology to connect the Kearney and Omaha iEXCEL campuses on a regular basis. Students use the Proto units for their classroom presentations and virtual art shows, which have appeared in the Buffett Cancer Center. Proto is a part of the campus’ Interprofessional AI Literacy Course and also presents holograms of important leaders to insure their legacy lives – including Retired Chancellor Douglas A. Christensen and major donor Ruth Scott. And for the second year in a row, UNMC has made Proto a central part of its important Stroke Conference – using it to show stroke survivors on multiple campuses and discuss recovery. |
AI Meets Empathy at LifeTown Columbus
Last week, Proto’s hologram technology took center stage at LifeTown Columbus, a 5,000-square-foot simulated village in New Albany, Ohio, where students with special needs practice real-world life, social, and pre-employment skills — everything from opening a bank account to filling a prescription. The occasion: the public unveiling of “Super Buddy,” a new AI-powered hologram named Mia, built on Proto’s platform. Ohio Governor, Mike DeWine, attended the launch event, calling Super Buddy a “positive use of AI” and praising its human-set safety boundaries — notable timing, given the wider national conversation this year about AI oversight. Students from Whitehall City Schools were among the first to try the technology, with roughly 70 students a day now working with Mia as part of their LifeTown visits. Early research from Miami University is also showing the potential of the experience to drive deeper engagement: 71% of students who worked with Mia chose to continue with additional learning scenarios, compared with just 30% of students completing the same learning activities through worksheets. The program of O.S.U. Chabad House is intended as a pilot with plans to expand nationally. |
Proto Teams Up With Netflix for Wonka's The Golden Ticket
More than 50 years after Wonkavision captivated audiences in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Netflix has brought the idea into the real world with Wonka’s The Golden Ticket. Proto Hologram was a key part of the production, with hosts appearing as life-sized holograms that interact with contestants in real time. For Proto founder David Nussbaum, the project is especially meaningful: as a kid, he was fascinated by Mike Teavee’s ability to appear somewhere he physically wasn’t, an idea he later referenced when explaining his vision for Proto. Now, that childhood inspiration has come full circle as “Wonkavision 2.0” becomes a reality through Proto. Since its release, Wonka’s The Golden Ticket has become the #1 kids’ show and #2 show overall on Netflix.
